Technology is a driving force of today’s society. The development of it changed many different industries and everyday life of each human being on the planet. These are software, devices, tools and resources. It enables to communicating, measuring and making better decision based on collected data, just to name few of its features.
Digital technologies can have big impact on sustainability. Environmental issues are one of the most important problems humanities have to face in 21st century. The consumption of energy and natural resources contributes heavily to global warming problem and there is an urgent need for finding a solution to it. Technology can help to find them and implement better ones to save the planet before it might be too late. It is time to think about the activities that cause harm to the earth and replace them with new behaviors, and technology can definitely can help to change them.
Many Industries are facing this problem and it influences the actions taken by them. Tourism industry is no different, the carbon footprint, energy use, waste management are the main problem to deal with. As mentioned before the technology is there to help rearrange some of the actions that are being taken and create more sustainable environment.
This module will present the digital solutions for tourism industry that can make their activities more sustainable and environmentally friendly. ICT is a big sector which is very important for tourism industry so it is important to know the solutions that can be implemented to not only reduce the harm that tourism cause to the planet, but also to promote the attitudes and awareness related to sustainability. Beside that the module will present the techniques of green hotels in terms of building management, water and energy usage or wireless communication system RFID. In the last chapter the present/future of tourism is briefly presented which is Virtual Reality tools.
